I have boxes of negatives in the attic. Boxes of negatives and prints waiting to be put in albums. Slides I want to digitalise etc. etc.

It is an organic mess! I hate to put my trust in Flickr – even though it works well and supposedly we could get them out they seem to have new long numerical file names.

I stumbled on this family pix! Not that old – only a decade or so but fun to find… they sort of work. And linking to them here will give them life.

The index to these pre-flikr efforts follows:

Photo Album Index

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. – Apple Inc.

I find it very hard to live on the soft edge. I crave order, but can’t really find it of course. I like the hard edge, everything in neat little boxes, with an index and rules for access et. etc. But it is no way to live… perhaps why computers are forcing us too much in that direction. Developing more tolerance for the mess is important. Perhaps it is not a mess, it is all birth, becoming!

This outline meditation helps – it is in itself a hard edge form, to find the soft edge. This is so relevant to me right now as Kate seems to manage that soft space, and I freak out!

http://new-paradigm.co.uk/softedge.htm

From Richard Seel

1) The Soft Edge

1.1) Some people are comfortable in the soft centre.

1.2) Some people enjoy operating at the hard edge.

1.3) The soft edge is where lasting transformation can take place.

1.4) The soft edge is where people and processes interact.

1.5) The soft edge is always shifting.

1.51) Why "in" the soft edge? Because there is the experience of immersion and uncertainty—the soft edge as the edge of chaos, perhaps.

1.52) We know that we are near the edge, but cannot see where it is.

1.53) When we recognise that we are in the soft edge we can also recognise the need for new ways of seeing to help us gain perspective and clarity.

How and where to share photos remains a problem IMO. Flickr is rather wonderful but it is in the hands of yahoo, which is a gross company. I’ve hated them ever since they bought egroups and messed them up.

I have never managed the WordPress upload system well, perhaps that would be ok, but it is nice to have all my pix on a photo site that is social and public, yet not the blog. Zenphoto was ok, I had a series of rather nice albums. But it got out of date and let in the hack attack perhaps. Hard to maintain. There is a lot to be said for Flickr – WordPress, Facebook, twitter integration, slideshows, email sharing etc

TAKING BACK THE HEART: Sam Crofskey, of C1 Espresso, and Jeremy Jon Stewart, of Alice in Videoland, will be teaming up in the undamaged Alice building.

Christchurch Earthquake 2011 Through the looking glass for a flat white

Alice in Videoland will reopen by the end of next month and will share its High St premises with C1 Coffee.

The cafe’s former premises across the road from Alice were badly damaged in the February earthquake and are being demolished.

Alice will move into new space at the back of its undamaged building, while C1 Coffee will refurbish the ground-floor space formerly taken by the video store and reopen in March.

C1 co-owner Sam Crofskey said: “When we first set up on High St there was nothing else around, so we have done this before.

“It was empty shops and offices, so we have turned back the clock 15 years, but this time we have well-established brands.

“We will be one of the first new, permanent businesses setting up in the central city. This is not us waiting and seeing what will happen, but it is us putting a line in the sand and saying this is what we are doing.

“Our challenge is we are in the city centre, but it is not in the heart of anything. That is our challenge – to create a vibrant place where people want to be.

“There is a real opportunity for us to really get it right this time and give the people of Christchurch something really special.”

Alice’s spokesman Paul Stewart said a 42-seat arthouse cinema would be built in the new premises and open in March or April as a further drawcard for the city centre.

“We want to be able to blow you away. We could be the only arthouse screen in town,” he said.

“There were festival films that were great but didn’t get much of a showing here. They would be perfect for our little theatre.” The Alice building was behind the cordon, which is scheduled to be raised at the end of next month.

Crofskey said the premises would be restored, revealing historic ceilings and floors in the former government building.

* The Press apolgises for an earlier typo in the number of seats the arthouse cinema will have. Owing to proximity of the 0 and – keys, it accidentally read “420-seat arthouse cinema”, when in fact it will be a 42-seat theatre. Sorry about that.
