The Future of Web Content – HTML5, Flash & Mobile Apps:

The recent introduction of the new Apple iPad has stirred the discussion over the future of web content and application runtime formats, and shone light onto the political and business battles emerging between Apple, Adobe and Google. These discussion are often highly polarized and irrational. My hope in this post is to help provide some balance and clarity onto this discussion.

My somewhat vitriolic comments follow

The article and the comments together make for a good read. I am now thinking of the Net, not in terms of open / closed, but as a sort of battle field for various economic and political interests. At least the enemy are in-fighting. Whoever wins is the enemy. The corporates determine the very shape of the net, there is no disintermediation, only re-intermediation by bigger sharks. If we favour “more open” that favours Google probably, to sell more ads. Ads! Who needs ads!

Freedom is a strange notion. The iPhone has freed me up from being at the desk, I read far more than before. I read this article on the phone, sent myself a liink and am now blogging on the PC. It has no Flash, I hate it when I get the blue lego tile on the iPhone! I hate it that to build in flash costs $$$ worth of tools. I hate it that Apple stops Amazon from allowing book sharing on the iPhone Ugh!

I learned in the comments in the article that Apple does not allow developers on the Mac to access the GPU! That’s it, I lost all my Apple, thing of beauty lust. Gone.

Where is the EFF? http://www.eff.org/ WC3, what could they possibly do to create a people’s Web?

Do they make a phone in Venezuela? Or Cuba? I’d like to not feel contaminated by the dirty technology I always use. Windows XP, iPhone Ugh!

Afghanistan – NYT with Google

Interesting page, finally New York Times has a page that makes sense online! I guess it will update as life goes on, an interesting development. It might help both their business models but not the world. Here is a more pertinent summary.

The War in Afghanistan:

Summary: In a major policy move, President Obama has committed 30,000 more United States troops to Afghanistan but added he would begin drawing out American forces there starting in July 2011. But administration officials have since scrambled to defend that withdrawal schedule. Some lawmakers voiced skepticism. Mr. Obama’s decision is likely to prove to be a defining one for his administration. The policy also leaves unanswered the question of whether Afghan President Hamid Karzai will met the challenge and how to respond if he does not. The strategy’s success may ultimately be determined in an unruly region that straddles the Afghan-Pakastani border.

Google, owner of the means of promotion

I have had a major re-install and have moved from FeedDemon to Google Reader. Seems fine. It takes a while to set it all up, though I did import my old OPML file. I am also keeping a backup of my Google reader installation, I am sick of re-doing everything as I reinstall the OS.

Here is a link to my Starred & Shared items. Anything I particularly like or just may want to return to or share. So far there are just a couple of concluding posts from Thousand Sketches.

The challenge is to narrow it down so I get less but more relevant posts.

What goes into my brain is as important as what goes into my mouth. In both cases people are spending money to get their stuff in. It cost millions to market a movie, we can make them, and distribute them but to promote them you need millions. They use their power influence my prefrences. Filtering my reading myself seems very important, but I doubt I am getting what I really want, which is more socially filtered versions of the world.

Ironically to fine tune my view of the world I am using a Google product, and thedy are the ultimate owner of the means of promotion.
