Wonderful work, only in the Internet Archive – I won’t paste the whole lot here, just a teaser. I trust the Archive will be there as long as my site…
But the immediate aim is to become conscious of technology, to become aware of its omnipresence in our lives and to examine its effects on us and to take a hard look at the culture it has created. Ultimately, it is not a matter of technical knowledge, but rather is psychological and cultural one in nature. This being the case, most of us, according to our personal resources and interests, can effectively participate.
Curiously, the challenge of confronting technology reminds me of the feminist movement of the late sixties and early seventies. That movement got going when small, informal “consciousness-raising” groups sprang up everywhere and in which women shared their experiences freely with each other. These groups were intensely personal in nature although the women who took part knew instinctively that “the personal is political”—meaning that what they discussed among themselves would have ramifications for the whole of society. Technology as an issue may be considered to lack that essential ingredient—the personal—which triggered one of the most revolutionary movements of our time. And yet it a genuinely deeply “personal” issue as much as a social and political one since it affects each and everyone. But also because our relationship with it goes far deeper than we yet understand.
